Extraordinary through the Ordinary07/18/10 John Chang Series: 120 Years: How God Shaped Moses Over a Lifetime Jesus was called to the poor. As a community that follows Christ, loving our socially diminished and economically disadvantaged neighbors is evidence that we've yoked our lives to him. This requires us to re-think how to care for the poor in ways that bring hope and justice. The Master's vision for human relationships requires people to create tension by being honest with one another. When a follower of Christ lovingly confronts another Christian about the way he or she has been hurt, it opens the door for authentic spiritual community. Relationships like these are realized by people whose hearts have been softened by Jesus and his forgiving work on the cross. Our fears determine much of way we live. At times they even become overwhelming and debilitating. Listen how Jesus cares for people's souls by trumping one fear with another. Healthy faith communities make for healthy neighborhoods. We express Jesus by doing good for others. This includes honoring our authorities and demonstrating kindness and humility towards our neighbors. We live this way because God has been abundantly kind and merciful to us. Mosaic welcomes Ghassan Thomas, pastor of a church in Baghdad, Iraq. Guest speaker Jason Ostrander depicts the life of Peter through a first-person narrative. Following Jesus is not a solo act. Instead, God invites us to stir each other to do what is loving and good. This happens as we establish personal relationships and meet regularly to encourage one another. The origin of the church is best understood when we look at it in the larger context of the kingdom of God. The mission of the Holy Spirit is to help the church be about "kingdom business." There are two symbols in Scripture to help us understand the Spirit's purposes -- oil which represents our calling and fire which represents transformation. Together they offer us a compelling invitation to serve in the church with passion. True community begins when we discover that God is in community...father, son, holy spirit. From there we can begin to talk about the characteristics that unite Christ followers. Within the community of believers each one of us is in need of healing and also called to lead others to health. How does God want us to function as a church that cares for the physical and emotional pain of others? Jesus, and the apostles, give us a model for approaching this important ministry. One-on-one conversation with Randy Shaw and Tim Osborn where Randy passes the Lead Pastor baton to Tim. From the earliest days of the church, Jesus followers have been persecuted. Today persecution ranges from being mocked and marginalized in our city to imprisonment, beating, sexual abuse, and death in many countries around the globe. As we read the stories of persecution in Scripture, we are challenged to respond with courage, knowing that God is actively at work in our world. The dramatic story of Ananias and Sapphira demonstrates just how destructive lying and greed can be. Lies and greed prevent individuals from experiencing the full life Jesus taught about and can cripple the church in its pursuit of its mission. Rather than constructing a false self for others, Jesus followers are to practice a risky honesty. Instead of conforming to a culture of unquestioned consumption and greed, the church is called to be a people known for self-sacrifice. A look at the essential experience that defines belonging to the Church. Some of the most divisive forces in our world today are prejudice and favoritism. God is just and loves without partiality. Jesus followers are to strive for this kind of love – a love that sees beyond our social, ethnic and cultural divisions. In the book of Acts we find reoccuring themes which provide windows to spiritual renewal. If we desire to grow our lives will be characterized by expectation, confession, and submission. The individual who seeks to know God will live into these practices on a daily basis. This talk is the first in the Mosaic Advent series. It seeks to ignite the imagination regarding economic and political forces that stand in opposition to the cause of the Kingdom, and then encourages followers of Jesus to live subversively until His 2nd advent. The "empire" of materialism dominates the season of Christmas. Everyone is buying, giving and getting -- but the joy is short-lived. In a few short weeks we realize that we have been let down.... again! It's time to rethink the Christmas dream. When we consider who Christ is, and why he came, we see what real "giving" is all about. Together with the Apostle Paul we say, "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" In the original Christmas, God gave to the world in the most tangible and vulnerable way possible. He gave to us by taking on human flesh in Jesus Christ - becoming fully human, yet fully divine. What does this mean for how we give? Do you ever wonder if God hears you? Jesus tells all who wrestle with the confidence that God really hears and cares about us something very different than what our fears may tell us. He says to pray, to ask, look and expect with confidence that God will answer. We celebrate Christmas because Jesus came to meet our greatest need. May we in turn help those in need around us, remembering that Jesus consistently cared for the poor. One way we spread God's love is by redistributing what we have beyond our needs to those whose needs are unmet. Jesus was tempted by the devil to meet his own needs, in his own time, in his own way. We face these same temptations, or tests, today. Our response in times of temptation and testing will reveal if we rely on ourselves or God. The Apprentice Jesus chose 12 disciples on the front end of his ministry. What does a disciple - an apprentice of Jesus - really look like? The Apostle Peter makes a good case study in our attempt to develop a profile. We can then ask ourselves, "Am I an apprentice of Jesus?" The Blessings of Obedience Often times Jesus does not answer our requests in the way that we have in mind. When it is clear that he has other plans we would be wise to put our agenda aside, take Mary's advice and "Do whatever he tells you". His plans are far better than ours. It Could Be Her Name - Grace One of the greatest stories of the mystery of God's love takes place in this text. A woman rejected by her town because of her promiscuity is accepted by Jesus, while an accomplished religious leader looks on, utterly confused. It is a wonderful demonstration of God's grace.
Learning in a Storm There are certain things about a person we can only learn by going through a difficult, painful, or dangerous experience with them. The same is true with God. It is in our most extreme times of need, the difficult, painful, and crisis moments of life that we get to know the power of God. We see this in the lives of Jesus’ disciples as they have a near death experience. Extra-Ordinary Christians Jesus' heart breaks for oppressed and neglected people and wants them to know him as their King, and tells his followers to pray that God will send out people to carry this message to the world. In response to this prayer, Jesus gives ordinary Christians the extraordinary responsibility of being his voice and hands in the world. Fast Food Savior Throughout the Scripture there are several stories that involve fast food (none that involve a drive-thru). In one of those stories Jesus tells his disciples to feed a crowd of about 15,000 hungry, newly healed village people. Together the disciples have one combo meal and feel completely inadequate to the task. Jesus takes the one combo meal and somehow feeds everyone. In doing this Jesus teaches his disciples, and us, that we can bring ourselves, as inadequate as we are, to him and he'll accomplish what he wants done. Pure Gospel The word "gospel" means good news. So how good is the good news when it comes to Jesus? In this story we find an amazing display of help and hope. The darkness is shattered by the light... it is "pure gospel!" Disappointment With God
Ruin and Rescue Zack is a tax collector who has wrapped his identity, meaning, and hope around his significant wealth. No one like him. After spending a short time with Jesus, Zack gives away all his money and follows Jesus. This is a story of Jesus doing the impossible in life of a rich man, and a reminder that life apart from Jesus is in ruin and in need of being rescue.
The God Who Serves On the night before he was crucified, Jesus made a huge statement about serving others. In this story we see Jesus at his best -- thinking of others before himself. After an amazing display of humility he ends the evening with an important command: "Love one another as I have loved you."
Tom and the Resurrection Because the implications of it are so significant, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ can often seem too good to be true. One of Jesus' closest friends even thought this. Tom, one of the disciples, doubted that Jesus really rose from the dead. After encountering the resurrected Jesus in person, Tom again believed that Jesus had unique power and hope to restore all that is wrong and broken in this world. Many of us can relate to Tom's story. Dealing With Doubt We often try to repress our hide our doubts. However, we need to learn to process them honestly with God and others. When we do, our faith has a chance to grow. So let's get our doubts on the table and start the conversation. Does God Answer Prayer Seemingly unanswered prayer is a barrier to a relationship with God for some and an evidence that God does not exist for others. Scripture teaches that God answers every prayer and that God has our best in mind, even when we can't yet see it. Does God Like Me? This talk is an invitation to consider the expression on God's face when he looks at you. Can A Loving God Send A Person To Hell? Jesus spoke about Hell regularly. He described Hell as eternal isolation and alienation from the loving Creator God. Rather than a loving God sending people to agonizing, eternal isolation, He pursues us and demonstrates his love by sending his Son to die for us. What Will Heaven Be Like? Does heaven ever seem completely detached from daily life? Is something sitting out there for when a person dies? Scripture describes heaven as not just a place, but more importantly as the presence of God and therefore, what we do in our lives now can prepare us to most enjoy God's presence in that place for all eternity. The Problem of Evil One of the most significant barriers to faith in God is the existence of evil and suffering in our world. If God is all powerful and loving, why does he allow so much pain and injustice? By looking at the stories of Joseph and Job in Scripture, we can find help in dealing with the problem of evil. Lord Save Us From Your Followers When it comes to doubt, many people stumble over the stunning disappointments found in the history of the church. How shall we respond to the disillusionment created by Christ's "followers?" What steps should we take to make sure we are not part of the problem? Why Is God Silent When I Need Him Most? There are times when we desperately need God to help us and yet he remains hidden. What is God trying to accomplish during these seasons of confusion and how should we respond to his silence? These questions were faced by many people in the scriptures -- their honesty and courage help us find our way. Religion and Following Jesus Ever think your life is a disappointment to God? This talk helps look at the key differences of mere religion and the gospel of Jesus to help provide a clear path out of trying to earn God's approval. The Constant Attention of God This is an ancient song written to remind us that God never stops watching and protecting us. God's attention to us is no different in the mundane details or major crisis of our life. God doesn't pay more attention to us when we do something wrong or right. The promise in this song is that he carefully and constantly watches us. God's Incomparable Word In this Psalm David displays a genuine love for the scriptures. He sees God's Word as the pathway to a world view, a moral compass, and a personal hope. This Psalm invites us to discover the wonder of what it means to be shaped by the personal revelation of God in the text of scripture. The Delight Of The Blessed The first Psalm is a call to study, meditate, and enjoy Scripture so that it shapes our thinking and feeling. It is also a warning of the danger of allowing our thoughts and feelings to be shaped by the things of this world. Psalm 46 What's Your Story This Psalm highlights four stories where God reverses a hopeless situation. The writer invites us to join in, to tell our story. How did the Lord rescue us in a time of crisis? Psalm 107 reminds us that, in the end, our stories are part of a grand narrative -- we are connected to God's story and he promises to faithfully see us through. Give Me Some Room Ever feel trapped by the circumstances of life? Ever feel completely boxed in by your financial situation, unsatisfying relationship, or disappointing job? An ancient song written by King David of Israel celebrates how he found greater joy in God than in the circumstances of his life. This song is a challenge for those who follow Jesus today, to find their joy and peace in Him rather than anything else. When A Heart Should Break For many of us, admitting we are wrong or have caused pain in another's life is difficult. We frequently exert much effort to conceal our guilt. There is a better way to live. However, it involves true sorrow, conviction, and confession - what Scripture describes as the breaking of our heart before God. When we agree with God that we've done wrong, that we've sinned, forgiveness is quick and restoration can begin. David, the king of Israel, writes this song about his long concealed sin (adultery, murder, lying) and asks not just for forgiveness, but restoration. The Unfamiliar Passions of God Bonded labor and sex trafficking are clear examples of injustice in the world today, where people with power abuse it and oppress others. The God of the Bible is a God of justice. He calls the church to seek justice by working to free the oppressed and prosecute those who abuse power. Choosing a Place For Myself In The Middle of God's Unfolding Story As Randy kicks off Urban Camp at Mosaic, he addresses how God meets our need to be apart of something bigger than ourselves. Everyone Needs to Belong God has wired us to belong to one another as followers of Jesus. This belonging is lived out in relationships characterized by mutual care, deepening faith, and mission. What To Do When Your Family Is Dysfunctional Joseph was a man who found himself surrounded by confusing and broken relationships. In the middle of the dysfunction, he was able to find his way to emotional and spiritual health Sampson: Why People Fail While Sampson is seen as a super-hero his inability to stay in bounds cost him dearly. This talk calls attention to the reality of living in a city where "everyone does what is right in his/her own eye's and why its so important to live in dependency upon Christ. Giving Up The Good For The Best Sooner or later, we have to answer the question Esther faced -- am I going to make the "good life" my dream or will I risk everything and join God in rescuing a broken world? Will I try to write my own fantasy or join Him in writing the grand narrative of salvation history? The Questionable Characters God Chooses Many people doubt that God really can use them, most often because they believe they are disqualified for some reason or simply not qualified enough. To correct this false belief, we have the story of Rahab - a prostitute and a liar who was marginalized by her own people. Because of her faith, God not only rescues her from destruction, but chooses her to play a key role in his mission. God chooses the most unlikely and ordinary people for his purposes. Love For the Unlovely We've all run away from something before. When we run away from God, he regularly demonstrates love and grace by providing odd or painful experiences as opportunities to return to him. Jonah ran away from God, got thrown overboard in a storm, swallowed by a fish and gave up his disobedience for obedience. Loving God In A World Of Idols Daniel consistently loved God in a culture filled with dazzling idols. Like Daniel, we are faced with the choice of pursuing the idols of safety and success or giving our hearts to God. When we encounter God and see how dazzling he is, he becomes the treasure of our hearts, and the idols that scream for our lives pale in comparison to him. Politics - Where is the love? Bringing up politics in mixed company can be risky. There are so many different issues, positions, emotions and philosophies when it comes to government. This talk will explain the balance between submitting to governing authorities and the Biblical boundaries for civil disobedience, as well as some key reminders for followers of Jesus during this particular political season. Politics - Who Are We? Your citizenship can determine quite a bit of your politics and how you view government. Peter reminds his friends, who were being increasingly marginalized because they followed Jesus, that they were now aliens in their own land. Followers of Jesus are citizens of the Kingdom of God first and of any earthly country second. Our hope should be in God, his Gospel, and the change it can bring. We are then free to think differently and even disagree on political issues, because they are not where our hope is.
Money: Where's Your Treasure? Taboo: Politics, Money and Religion Matthew 6: 19-24
How we handle money significantly impacts our life. Some dedicate their lives to accumulating more and more money. Others hang on to a little bit, never letting go of it. Jesus calls us to consider all we have his and to give it away rather than hold or accumulate material wealth. Money: The Ownership Issue In a world where economic concerns are mounting it is easy to let anxiety rise in our lives. To keep our hearts on target, God invites us to demonstrate thankfulness, humility and generosity instead of the need for control. King David led the way in modeling the freedom that comes when we realize that God owns everything. Money: Giving and Debt This talk deals with the very practical side of giving away money by answering 3 questions: How do we give (and how much)? What is a major barrier to giving (debt!)? and How is the money used? Religion: The Only Path To God? Jesus claimed that nobody can get to God apart from him. And while this claim is taboo in a pluralistic culture, it ultimately offers life-changing hope to anyone who trusts Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. Religion: The Good News about not being Good Are people good? It may feel better to answer 'yes', but Scripture teaches otherwise and offers wonderful hope for everyone. The good news in realizing at our core, humans are flawed, broken, and sinful is that Jesus' sacrifice and offer of grace can save us when we are unable to save ourselves. The Attitude of Gratitude Gratitude is a relational expression – a display of what we value in another person. When we love someone we desire to communicate our thankfulness to them for who they are and what they do. David displays this in the Psalms. He models the attitude of gratitude in ways that can help us deepen our own spiritual journey. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Intro to Advent This talk focuses on the pre-incarnate appearances of Jesus as "the angel of the Lord" The Eternal One Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but not his beginning. If we think that Jesus began at his birth, we are in danger of worshiping a false god and are on our way to starting a cult. Jesus took on human flesh (the Incarnation) and became fully human, but remained fully God. Jesus is God. He is eternal, with no beginning and no end. If he was anything less, Christmas would just be another day to get off of work and school, but not the celebration of the greatest act of love - God taking on human flesh. Did You Make All This?! Our view of the baby in the manger is raised to new levels when we understand that he is also the creator of the universe. The scripture clearly teach that the same Jesus one who flung the galaxies into space left his glory and became a creature within his own creation. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ And After The Manger The image of Jesus we're inundated with during the Christmas season, the little baby Jesus, in no way represents all of who he is - the eternal, Creator who is all-powerful. In this talk we take a look a short poem written by Paul to a young church which is at risk of settling for a diminished view of Jesus Christ. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ My Life For those who agree to follow Jesus, he wants to shape their character, give them a community, and send them on mission. This first talk in our series focuses on what God wants for our character and two lies that derail us from letting him have access to it. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ My Community For those who agree to follow Jesus, he wants to shape their character, give them a community, and send them on mission. This second talk in our series focuses on the community God gives his followers and how we are intended to contribute and receive from it by addressing three lies. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ My Mission God wants us to say yes to his mission. So what does it mean to be salt and light in today’s world? The Beatitudes teach us how our mission is characterized by a counter-intuitive and counter-cultural strategy. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ The Unique Good News The good news that Jesus teaches is that there is nothing we can do to please God. We can't make God be our friend or even like us. Rather than that being horrible news, its really good news because Jesus also teaches that he's done all the work for us, through his death on the cross, and offers us favor that we can't earn (grace). It also allows us to experience true freedom, since we are no longer trapped in an endless cycle of trying to earn God's approval, love, or favor, nor are we left wondering if God loves us. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ One Grace Story The good news that Jesus teaches is that there is nothing we can do to please God. We can't make God be our friend or even like us. Rather than that being horrible news, its really good news because Jesus also teaches that he's done all the work for us, through his death on the cross, and offers us favor that we can't earn (grace). It also allows us to experience true freedom, since we are no longer trapped in an endless cycle of trying to earn God's approval, love, or favor, nor are we left wondering if God loves us. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ The Most Important Closed-Door Meeting Of All Time When some people who sounded smart tried to convince early followers of Jesus that they needed to adopt Jewish cultural rules and regulations in order to earn salvation, the leaders of the early church met together and agreed that faith in Jesus (plus nothing) is all a person needs to be saved and accepted by God. This reality gives us the freedom to accept other followers of Jesus and find unity and friendship in our faith, even if we are different from each other. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ On Friday Feb. 6th, Mosaic had the awesome opportunity to host Shane Claiborne. Shane is a speaker and author who is challenging the church to rethink about it means to be Christ followers in the world today. If you've never heard Shane before, prepare to be inspired and challenged. Enjoy. Guarding Grace Guarding grace in our lives involves becoming aware of the tendency toward trying to win God's favor. True spirituality is pulls us away from self-effort toward Christ's unconditional love. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Faith Based Living The good news of Jesus is not just a starting point, but the very thing that allows a person to daily live a life of freedom, joy, and hope. In this talk we are challenged to not just start with faith in Jesus, but to daily live by faith instead of being lured back into trying to be our own savior. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Breaking the Law Why did God give the Law if its on the basis of his unearned favor (grace) that we are to relate to him? This talk addresses the purpose of the law - to teach what sin is and to point us toward grace. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Freedom & the Gospel of Grace This text summarizes what Paul's been arguing for throughout the first half of the letter, and unpacks some of the benefits of what Christians have in Jesus. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Idolatry in Stealth Mode Idolatry is taking anything in life, other than Jesus, and turning it into an essential thing we depend on for significance, happiness, security, meaning, identity, worth, or fulfillment. When we do this, we make that particular thing, or behavior, or relationship a savior, and therefore an idol that enslaves us. This talk explores idolatry in Portland today. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Risking That God Is Right There are two systems for finding God's approval -- law and grace. These approaches are not compatible, yet we oten try to combine them. In the end, we have to risk that grace, and grace alone, will work. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Freed To Love Wondering if God loves us can cause fear, anxiety, and insecurity. Jesus came to set us free from these concerns through grace. However, many return to them - either losing their freedom by trying to earn God's love (legalism) or abusing their freedom by doing whatever we want (license). Ultimately both of these paths end in fear, anxiety, and insecurity (what Paul calls slavery). God desires that we remain free to love Him and others, by relying on grace. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Palm Sunday At the height of his political popularity, Jesus moves forward with his mission, which leads to his rejection by the people and ultimately his execution. Jesus does this because he is full of compassion, and is carrying out God's plan to meet our greatest need. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Easter Sunday Two friends are walking home in despair, having lost hope. But things are not what they seem. Jesus had rose from the dead earlier that morning and meets them as they walk along. When we lose hope, we can know that Jesus is alive and ready to be part of our story and is willing to go down any road to find us. After encountering Jesus, the two friends sprint back to their friends to share their joy. www.mosaicportland.org/whats-happening/ Jesus used every day objects and experiences to illustrate the most important things in life, showing that he was fully acquainted with human life.
