  <title>7 Mile Sprint (Luke 24:13-35)</title>
  <description>Easter Sunday
7 Mile Sprint
Luke 24:13-35

Two friends are walking home in despair, having lost hope. But things are not what they seem. Jesus had rose from the dead earlier that morning and meets them as they walk along. When we lose hope, we can know that Jesus is alive and ready to be part of our story and is willing to go down any road to find us. After encountering Jesus, the two friends sprint back to their friends to share their joy.

  <description>Palm Sunday
Galatians 5:1-15

At the height of his political popularity, Jesus moves forward with his mission, which leads to his rejection by the people and ultimately his execution. Jesus does this because he is full of compassion, and is carrying out God's plan to meet our greatest need.

  <title>Freed To Love (Galatians 5:1-15)</title>
  <description>Freed To Love
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 5:1-15

Wondering if God loves us can cause fear, anxiety, and insecurity. Jesus came to set us free from these concerns through grace. However, many return to them - either losing their freedom by trying to earn God's love (legalism) or abusing their freedom by doing whatever we want (license). Ultimately both of these paths end in fear, anxiety, and insecurity (what Paul calls slavery). God desires that we remain free to love Him and others, by relying on grace.

  <description>Risking That God Is Right
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 4:21-31

There are two systems for finding God's approval -- law and grace. These approaches are not compatible, yet we oten try to combine them. In the end, we have to risk that grace, and grace alone, will work.

<title>Idolatry in Stealth Mode (Galatians 4:8-20)</title>
  <description>Idolatry in Stealth Mode
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 4:8-20

Idolatry is taking anything in life, other than Jesus, and turning it into an essential thing we depend on for significance, happiness, security, meaning, identity, worth, or fulfillment. When we do this, we make that particular thing, or behavior, or relationship a savior, and therefore an idol that enslaves us. This talk explores idolatry in Portland today.

  <description>Faith Based Living
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 3:1-15

The good news of Jesus is not just a starting point, but the very thing that allows a person to daily live a life of freedom, joy, and hope. In this talk we are challenged to not just start with faith in Jesus, but to daily live by faith instead of being lured back into trying to be our own savior.

<title>The Most Important Closed-Door Meeting of All Time (Galatians 2:1-10)</title>
<description>The Most Important Closed-Door Meeting Of All Time
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 2:1-10

When some people who sounded smart tried to convince early followers of Jesus that they needed to adopt Jewish cultural rules and regulations in order to earn salvation, the leaders of the early church met together and agreed that faith in Jesus (plus nothing) is all a person needs to be saved and accepted by God. This reality gives us the freedom to accept other followers of Jesus and find unity and friendship in our faith, even if we are different from each other.

  <title>One Grace Story (Galatians 1:10-24)</title>
  <description>One Grace Story
Freedom &amp; the Gospel of Grace
Galatians 1:10-24

The good news that Jesus teaches is that there is nothing we can do to please God. We can't make God be our friend or even like us. Rather than that being horrible news, its really good news because Jesus also teaches that he's done all the work for us, through his death on the cross, and offers us favor that we can't earn (grace). It also allows us to experience true freedom, since we are no longer trapped in an endless cycle of trying to earn God's approval, love, or favor, nor are we left wondering if God loves us.

<title>And After The Manger (Colossians 1:13-23)</title>
  <description>And After The Manger
Jesus Before the Manger
Colossians 1:13-23

The image of Jesus we're inundated with during the Christmas season, the little baby Jesus, in no way represents all of who he is - the eternal, Creator who is all-powerful. In this talk we take a look a short poem written by Paul to a young church which is at risk of settling for a diminished view of Jesus Christ.

  <title>The Eternal One (John 8:48-59)</title>
  <description>The Eternal One
Jesus Before the Manger
John 8:48-59

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but not his beginning. If we think that Jesus began at his birth, we are in danger of worshiping a false god and are on our way to starting a cult. Jesus took on human flesh (the Incarnation) and became fully human, but remained fully God. Jesus is God. He is eternal, with no beginning and no end. If he was anything less, Christmas would just be another day to get off of work and school, but not the celebration of the greatest act of love - God taking on human flesh.

  <title>The Attitude of Gratitude</title>
  <description>The Attitude of Gratitude
Thanksgiving

Gratitude is a relational expression – a display of what we value in another person. When we love someone we desire to communicate our thankfulness to them for who they are and what they do. David displays this in the Psalms. He models the attitude of gratitude in ways that can help us deepen our own spiritual journey.

<title>Religion: The Good News About Not Being Good (Romans 3:9-26)</title>
<description>Religion: The Good News about not being Good
Taboo: Politics, Money and Religion
Romans 3:9-26

Are people good? It may feel better to answer 'yes', but Scripture teaches otherwise and offers wonderful hope for everyone. The good news in realizing at our core, humans are flawed, broken, and sinful is that Jesus' sacrifice and offer of grace can save us when we are unable to save ourselves.

  <title>What's Your Story (Psalm 107)</title>
  <description>What's Your Story
Lyrics: A series on Psalms
Psalms 107

This Psalm highlights four stories where God reverses a hopeless situation. The writer invites us to join in, to tell our story. How did the Lord rescue us in a time of crisis? Psalm 107 reminds us that, in the end, our stories are part of a grand narrative -- we are connected to God's story and he promises to faithfully see us through.
