Advent The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” This season marks the four weeks leading up to Christmas and is a time of anticipation and preparation for the coming of the King. Here’s how the Mosaic community wants to celebrate the arrival of Jesus:
Get to know him more
Pick up an Advent calendar in the Mosaic lobby. This handy calendar includes daily scripture readings to walk us through God’s big story of salvation leading up to Jesus.
Live for the same things he lived for
Freedom. Restoration. Joy. For everyone. This was God’s agenda 2,000 years ago when he sent his son into our broken world with an outrageous plan to rescue us.

In 2010, Americans celebrated this act of revolutionary love by spending 451 billion dollars and accumulating 19 billion in new credit card debt. On December 26 after 2 months of shopping malls, traffic jams and Rudolph on the radio, many were left with presents to return, looming debt and an empty feeling of missed purpose.
Here’s what we’ve discovered at Mosaic over the past 4 years:
Christmas can still be a world-changing event. It can still bring freedom, restoration, and joy. This happens when we exchange our celebration of stuff for a celebration of God’s only son Jesus, and when we let him use us to show the world that he is still here.
Spend Less & Give More
One of the tools that has helped Mosaic in this discovery is an international movement called Advent Conspiracy that calls us to proclaim Christ in the way we celebrate Christmas. We join with thousands of churches around the globe to show that Christmas can still change the world. Here’s how it works:
- SPEND LESS: On gifts we really don’t need. Resist the cultural message that buying more and spending more will bring fulfillment. If this is your first time participating in Advent Conspiracy, consider taking fewer trips to the mall and cutting back on the material gifts you buy. If you have made Advent Conspiracy a new part of your tradition, set aside the money you plan to give away as you continue creative gift-giving with a simplified Christmas budget.
- GIVE MORE: To family and friends. God didn’t spend a dime when he gave us the greatest gift ever known – the loving presence of his son in our world. Give that same gift of presence to the people you love by using your time & creativity to show them how much you care. Here are some ideas and some stories of what people in the Mosaic community did last year.
To those who need help the most. Though rich, Jesus became poor to love the poor, forgotten, overlooked and sick. By spending less on presents, we have the opportunity to give away the money we saved and join him in meeting physical and spiritual needs around the world. Throughout the month of December, you will have an opportunity to put money in a red Advent envelope and drop it in Mosaic’s offering or give here. 100% of these funds will be redistributed to these projects. Find out what God did with last year's Advent offering.
